As teachers/parents, we always hope the education we provide to our students/children will be useful for their future. Most of the time we think the way is by "feeding" them as much as possible the existing knowledge that we know. But actually, this kind of assumption needs some serious review immediately.
Some experts/educators suggested that the internet and other technology built around it has taken over the role of teachers in providing knowledge, so the role of the teachers has shifted from being the sole knowledge providers to facilitators who guide them on how to obtain the knowledge.
In the computer world, the general terms used to refer to it has been changing since its conception about half a century ago. In the beginning, the term Electronic Data Processing was most commonly used. After that, Management Information System and Information Technology was in trend. During the turning of the century, some experts coined the term Knowledge Management. Artificial Intelligence is also not a new term in this century. In manufacturing, we have witnessed that automation has replaced millions of number of blue collar jobs, and it keeps increasing. So, besides capability of doing pre-programmed repetitive jobs, gradually machines has actually reached the capability of obtaining, storing, and reproducing Knowledge when required. In other words, even machines can be "taught" knowledge and to be "smart" nowadays. In our education system, if we are still merely teaching knowledge contents to human, we are not preparing our students/children for the 21st century challenges, as the consequence of our current education system they will have to fight with machines or people from other developing countries who are willing to be paid much lower for the same knowledge they have.
To answer this, we need to teach them study/learning skills, so whatever subject/topic they need to learn now or in the future, whether the knowledge/skill has been existing today or yet to be invented/developed, they can learn/study it in the best and the most suitable way for each of them. Study/Learning skills can include the traditional ones like
-Managing Materials
-Managing Time
-Active Listening
-Note Taking
-Exam Preparation
and also the cutting-edge ones like
-Critical Thinking
-Creative Thinking
-Communicating
-Collaborating
by observing their unique Learning Styles and Multiple Intelligences.
